Martinez, city, seat (1850) of Contra Costa county, western California, U.S. It lies on the south shore of Carquinez Strait (between Suisun and San Pablo bays) north of Oakland. It was named for Ignacio Martínez, commandant of the San Francisco presidio and grantee (1829) of the Rancho El Pinole,
Established in 1876, Martinez is the County seat of Contra Costa County. It is located along the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers in the central part of the County. The City’s roots can be traced to the late 1840’s, when it served as a ferryboat transit point across the Carquinez straits on the way to the gold fields.
Martinez became the first town in the District of Contra Costa. Some months later, the California Legislature met to draw county lines and to designate a seat of Justice (government) for the new counties. Martinez was named county seat in 1851. The fledgling city developed rapidly. Agriculture would bring real prosperity in the early years.
The Martinez beavers are a family of North American beavers living in Alhambra Creek in downtown Martinez, California. Best known as the longtime home of famed 19th/20th-century naturalist John Muir, Martinez has become a national example of urban stream restoration utilizing beavers as ecosystem engineers.
