Conte di Strathmore e Kinghorne. Visconte Lyon (1677), Lord Glamis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw e Strathditchie (1677), Lord Glamis (1445) e Barone Bowes (1887). Il titolo di Conte di Kinghorne venne creato nella Parìa scozzese nel 1606 per Patrick Lyon. Nel 1677, la designazione della dignità nobiliare venne cambiata in "Conte di Strathmore e Kinghorne".
Egli succedette al padre come XVIII conte di Strathmore e Kinghorne nel 1987. Membro della Camera dei Lord in quanto Lord temporale, vi ricoprì il ruolo di junior whip per il Partito Conservatore tra il 1989 e il 1991 e poi quello di vice-capogruppo tra il 1991 e il 1994.
