The Warner animation division was founded in 1933 as Leon Schlesinger Studios, an independent company which produced the popular Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies animated short subjects for release by Warner Bros. Pictures. In 1944, Schlesinger sold the studio to Warner Bros., who continued to operate it as Warner Bros. Cartoons, Inc. until 1963.
Leon Schlesinger ( May 20, 1884 – December 25, 1949) [1] was an American film producer who founded Leon Schlesinger Productions, later known as Warner Bros. Cartoons. He was a distant relative of the Warner Brothers, and as head of his own studio, served as the producer of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical cartoons from 1930 to 1944 .
