During the early 19th century, Britain removed the death penalty for a wide range of crimes, including pickpocketing, forgery and rape. By 1861, the number of capital crimes had been reduced to five, including murder, treason, espionage, arson in royal dockyards and piracy with violence.
Capital punishment is the use of the death penalty by the state. It was first introduced in the UK in the 1500s, with eight capital crimes being formally defined. These included treason, petty treason, murder, robbery, larceny, rape and arson. Under the Murder Act 1752 a person convicted of murder was to be hanged within 48 hours.
