Charlotte Brontë nasce il 21 aprile 1816 a Thornton nello Yorkshire (Inghilterra), terza figlia del Reverendo Patrick Brontë e di Maria Branwell. Il padre era di umili origini, figlio di fittavoli, era però riuscito, grazie alla forza di volontà, a studiare a Cambridge e a prendere gli ordini sacerdotali.
