Chan was born on December 3, 1982, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Taiwanese actress Joan Lin and Hong Kong-born Chinese martial arts star Jackie Chan. Chan briefly attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, for two semesters, but did not graduate.

Chan was born on 7 April 1954 in British Hong Kong as Chan Kong-sang to Charles and Lee-Lee Chan, political refugees from the Chinese Civil War.
