The Pillars of Society (or "Pillars of the Community"; original Norwegian title: Samfundets støtter) is an 1877 play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen had great trouble with the writing of this play.
The Pillars of Society, drama in four acts by Henrik Ibsen, published in Norwegian as Samfundets støtter in 1877 and performed the following year. The play’s title initially refers to Karsten Bernick, whose good reputation is threatened by the return to town of his brother-in-law, Johan Tönnesen.

Pillars of Society was staged for the very first time at the Odense Teater by August Rasmussen's theatre company on 14 November 1877. Ibsen had long since been performed outside Norway, but this was in fact the first world première to take place on a stage outside Norway.
