Silent Witness is a British crime drama television series produced by the BBC, which focuses on a team of forensic pathology experts and their investigations into various crimes. First broadcast in 1996, the series was created by Nigel McCrery, a former murder squad detective based in Nottingham.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Sam Ryan returns to Cambridge to take up a teaching assignment and to work for the police as required. In her first case, she has to deal with the death of a six year old girl find floating in a nearby river. The autopsy reveals that the child has suffered previous abuse, including cigarette burns and several broken ribs.
Thomas investigates the case of John Sealy, a soldier who died during a military training exercise involving exposure to CS gas. It appears John died from an aneurism, but when Thomas discovers the trace of a possible nerve agent in his system, the family are desperate for answers.
