Ruskin College – originally known as Ruskin Hall, Oxford – was established in 1899 to provide education for working-class men who were could not access university. It was founded by Americans Charles A. Beard and Walter Vrooman , both of whom had studied at the University of Oxford.

Ruskin College was founded in 1899 by two Americans who studied at Oxford University and decided that the same level of education should be available to everyone, not just the elite. The College is named after John Ruskin, a radical pioneer of socialist thought. Ruskin has enjoyed some remarkable episodes in its history.
The Ruskin Colleges were a group of American colleges founded in the early 20th century by the socialist philanthropist Walter Vrooman, the college administrator George McAnelly Miller, and others, in the same spirit as the British Ruskin College, which Vrooman had cofounded.
