The school is housed in a number of buildings around Renfrew Street in the centre of Glasgow, upon Garnethill, an area first developed by William Harley of Blythswood Hill in the early 1800s. The most famous of its buildings was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in phases between 1896 and 1909.
Mackintosh incontrò alla Glasgow School of Art la giovane artista Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. Entrambi membri del gruppo noto come “I Quattro”, si sposeranno nel 1900. Dopo aver progettato diversi edifici di successo, nel 1903 divenne partner nello studio di Honeyman e Keppie.
