Although Borat is from Kazakhstan, all the footage of his hometown was shot in Glod, Romania. Like many of the unwitting participants in the film, they sued the filmmakers, asking for $38 million. The lawsuit was dismissed. The village is still there, and looks to be mostly unchanged, according to Google Street View.
In September 2020, the sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was officially confirmed to have been secretly filmed, completed, and screened, a few weeks after Baron Cohen was spotted driving a pick-up truck in character as Borat around Los Angeles.
