Pope Eugene III (Latin: Eugenius III; c. 1080 – 8 July 1153), born Bernardo Pignatelli, or possibly Paganelli, called Bernardo da Pisa, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 15 February 1145 to his death in 1153.

Fu consacrato la domenica di Exurge, il 18febbr. 1145 nel monastero di Farfa. Non si conoscono i motivi che spinsero l'abate Bernardo a scegliere il nome di Eugenio. In alcuni compendi storici del Medioevo, come ad es. nella cronaca di Martino di Troppau o nei Flores temporum, E. III viene qualificato come "simplex".

EUGENE III, BL. POPE. Pontificate: Feb. 15, 1145, to July 8, 1153; b. Bernardo Pignatelli; d. Tivoli. Bernardo Pignatelli was born near Pisa. He was most likely of humble origin and was probably educated in Pisa. By 1128 he was almost certainly serving as the prior of Saint Zeno.
