The capital of Saxony-Anhalt is Magdeburg. It is the second-largest city in the state, close to Halle (Saale). From 1994 to 2003, the state was divided into three regions ( Regierungsbezirke ), Dessau, Halle and Magdeburg and, below the regional level, 21 districts ( Landkreise ).
