The Mosin–Nagant is a five-shot, bolt-action, internal magazine–fed military rifle. Known officially as the 3-line rifle M1891 and informally in Russia and the former Soviet Union as Mosin's rifle (Russian: винтовка Мосина, ISO 9: vintovka Mosina), it is primarily found chambered for its original 7.62×54mmR cartridge.

Il Mosin–Nagant è un fucile a ripetizione manuale prodotto tra il 1891 ed il 1959 e usato in maniera estesa da Impero russo, Unione Sovietica e svariati altri stati. È uno dei fucili più prodotti della storia con oltre 37 milioni di esemplari, utilizzato per circa 100 anni.
Il semiautomatico Tokarev SVT 40 modello 38 e modello 40 utilizzava le stesse cartucce 7,62 x 54 mm R del Mosin-Nagant. Il fucile benché fosse un buon progetto non venne mai prodotto negli stessi numeri del Mosin-Nagant e non riuscì a replicarlo. La sperimentazione con piccole armi incominciò durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
The Nagant was designed by Léon Nagant, whose brother Émile had also designed the Mosin–Nagant rifle. The Nagant M1895 was adopted as the standard issue sidearm for the Imperial Russian Army and police officers, where it replaced earlier Smith & Wesson models such as the Model 3.

History. In February 1934, the Heereswaffenamt (Army Weapons Agency) ordered the adoption of a new military rifle. The Karabiner 98k was derived from earlier rifles, namely the Mauser Standardmodell of 1924 and the Karabiner 98b, which in turn had both been developed from the Gewehr 98.

Chambered in 7.62×54mmR, these versions were unusual for a lever-action rifle in that they also had a charger guide, allowing the M1895 rifle to be reloaded by the same charger clips used in the Mosin–Nagant bolt-action rifle.
