The Serbian Empire (Serbian: Српско царство / Srpsko carstvo, pronounced [sr̩̂pskoː tsâːrstʋo]) was a medieval Serbian state that emerged from the Kingdom of Serbia. It was established in 1346 by Dušan the Mighty , who significantly expanded the state.

Under the Nemanjić dynasty, which was to rule the Serb lands for the next 200 years, a powerful state emerged to dominate the entire Balkan Peninsula. It was founded, in part, on the ability and administrative capacity of its rulers and also on the establishment of a link between church and state.
This chapter sets the scene for the book by discussing historical legacies, changing borders and meanings of Serbia, and the Serbs relations with their neighbours, the empires and Great Powers, and how these factors shaped the modern Serbian society.
