Gilbert Cates (né Katz; June 6, 1934 – October 31, 2011) was an American film director and television producer, director of the Geffen Playhouse, a member of Cates/Doty Productions, and founding dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

1 nov 2011 · Gilbert Cates, a producer and director who produced 14 Academy Awards ceremonies and founded the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, died October 31, 2011, in Los Angeles. He was 77. Cates collapsed on the UCLA campus, where emergency personnel responded but were unable to revive him. The cause of death was not immediately known.
