James Leonard Farmer Sr. (June 12, 1886 – May 14, 1961), known as J. Leonard Farmer, was an American author, theologian, and educator. He was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and an academic in early religious history as well as theology.

James L. Farmer Jr, (1920-1999) fu uno dei capi del Movimento per i diritti civili degli afroamericani; James L. Farmer Sr, (1886-1961) fu fra le altre cose teologo e scrittore, il primo afroamericano del Texas nel riuscire ad ottenere un dottorato.
A child prodigy who earned early fame as a debater, Farmer grew up in Marshall, Texas, where his father, James L. Farmer, Sr. was a professor at the historically black Wiley College.

James Leonard Farmer, Sr., believed to be the first Black man in Texas to have a Ph.D., was born on June 12, 1886, in Kingstree, South Carolina, the son of Carolina and Lorena (Wilson) Farmer. His parents were former slaves.
