Community. About Riverside. Settled in 1836, Riverside, known then as the Aux Plains, first welcomed the Forbes family to its serene riverbanks and beautiful forest areas. Others soon discovered the desirability of the area.
Riverside Township was formed in 1870, and by 1871, Riverside had a water tower, a commercial building, the union church, a new train depot, and a 125 room hotel. Over 50 homes had been completed. The Chicago Fire in 1871 and the subsequent financial panic in 1873 left the RIC bankrupt.
