He was the first U.S. president to come from the area west of the Appalachians and the first to gain office by a direct appeal to the mass of voters. His political movement became known as Jacksonian Democracy.

Youth and Adulthood. Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, into a family of Scots-Irish Presbyterians. His parents Andrew and Elizabeth (nee Hutchinson) Jackson had emigrated with their sons Robert (b. 1765) and Hugh (b. 1763) to colonial North America from County Antrim in what is now Northern Ireland.
