The Barbary lion was a population of the lion subspecies Panthera leo leo. It was also called North African lion, Atlas lion and Egyptian lion. It lived in the mountains and deserts of the Maghreb of North Africa from Morocco to Egypt. It was eradicated following the spread of firearms and bounties for shooting lions.

This subspecies was first described under the trinomen Felis leo barbaricus by Johann Nepomuk Meyer, an Austrian zoologist, on the basis of a type specimen from Barbary.

The Barbary lion was the first lion type encountered and catalogued by emergent natural scientists of the Enlightenment. By the 1800s and early 1900s North African lions were frequently showcased in zoological gardens (Black et al. 2013) and their remains displayed in stately homes and museums.

14 mar 2020 · In the last 150 y, this decline has resulted in the extinction in the wild of the Barbary lion in North Africa, the Cape lion in South Africa, lion populations in the Middle East, and has led to increased fragmentation and decline of all of the remaining populations.

Whilst the extinction predates the era of the scientific conservation movement, the decline is relatively well documented in historical records. Recently unearthed accounts suggest Barbary lions survived later than previously assumed.
