The structures employed changed drastically over the course of the struggle in response to new currents in strategic thought and the demands of specific circumstances.
This article is designed to give background into the organization and tactics of Civil War armies. This brief survey is by no means exhaustive, but it should give enough material to have a better understanding of the capabilities of the forces that fought the American Civil War.
