23 ott 2015 · The 121,476 pensioners aged seventy to seventy four were born between July 1, 1841 and June 30, 1847 and were aged about fourteen to eighteen when the war began and about eighteen to twenty three when the war ended. Of course most of the older Civil war soldiers had died before 1917.
Also included were photos of the last three living Confederate soldiers (status and age disputed): William Lundy, 108; Walter Williams, 113; and John Salling, 110. In mid-2006, new census research indicated that Albert Woolson was actually 106 years old, being listed as less than one year old in the 1850 census.
The youngest known soldier, Union soldier Johnny Clem, was 9 when he enlisted as a drummer boy, 11 when he fought as a soldier and 12 when he was promoted to sergeant. At least 48 boys under 18 received the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Civil War period.
5 gen 2009 · Although soldiers generally ranged in age from 18 to 45, boys as young as 12 often served as cavalry buglers or drummer boys, and some men in their fifties and sixties enlisted as privates. 21 nov 2013 · The war was largely a young man’s fight — Union enlistment records indicate that more than 2 million soldiers were age 21 or under when they joined the cause — and some estimates place only 10 percent of the Federal force over age 30. There were, of course, cases on either extreme.
16 ago 2011 · The average Union soldier was 25.8 years old; there is no definite information on the average age of Confederate soldiers, but by the end of the war old men and young boys, who otherwise would have stayed home, were being pressed into service.
According to historian Bell I. Wiley, who pioneered the study of the Civil War common soldier, the average Yank or Reb was a ‘white, native-born, farmer, protestant, single, between 18 and 29.’ He stood about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 143 pounds. Most soldiers were between the ages of 18 and 39 with an average age just under 26.
