Gilbert & George, British collaboration between Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore, whose often humorous insertion of themselves into their art was an important chapter in postwar British art. For The Singing Sculpture, the duo dressed in suits, covered their faces in bronze powder, and sang a Depression-era tune.
They established their reputation in 1969 with THE SINGING SCULPTURE. Standing together on a table, they danced and sang the Flanagan and Allen standard Underneath the Arches – a song in which two tramps describe the pleasures of sleeping rough.
Although they created their art in a variety of mediums, they considered everything they did to be sculpture: Postal Sculptures, Magazine Sculptures, Charcoal on Paper Sculptures, Drinking Sculptures, and Video Sculptures.

Gilbert studia dapprima in Italia, alla Scuola d'Arte di Selva di Val Gardena /Wolkenstein e in seguito in Austria, alla Scuola d'Arte di Hallein, e infine in Germania all' Accademia di Belle Arti di Monaco di Baviera . George frequenta l' Adult Education Centre di Dartington, il Dartington Hall College of Art e l' Oxford School of Art .
Gilbert & George performed Singing Sculpture over a number of years and was their first success. For this performance they painted themselves in bronze and dressed in suits to sing and dance to a 1930s song titled Underneath the Arches.
