Milton Berle may have been “Mr Television” in the early years of TV, but for almost a quarter-century Sullivan was Mr Sunday Night. Considered by many to be the embodiment of banal, middle-brow taste, Sullivan exposed a generation of Americans to virtually everything there was to offer in the field of art and entertainment.
Elvis Presley had appeared with Milton Berle and Tommy Dorsey, but Sullivan's deal with Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, created national headlines. The sexual energy of Presley's first appearance on 9 September 1956 jolted the staid, Eisenhower conformism of Sullivan's audience.
