Syngman Rhee (Korean: 이승만, pronounced [iː.sɯŋ.man]; 26 March 1875 – 19 July 1965) was a South Korean politician who served as the first president of South Korea from 1948 to 1960. Rhee is also known by his art name Unam (우남; 雩南).
Syngman Rhee was the first president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and also the first president of South Korea. He was president for three-terms and his presidency was greatly affected by the Cold War tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
