The band was formed in early 1965 by brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry Cowsill; their brother John joined shortly thereafter. Originally Bill and Bob played guitar and Barry played the drums. When John learned to play drums and joined the band, Barry began playing bass.

Back in the 1960’s, four brothers who wanted to be The Beatles formed a band called The Cowsills. The original Cowsills consisted of Bill on guitar, Bob on guitar and organ, Barry on bass and John on drums. Early gigs were at school dances and churches around their home in Newport, RI.
Bob Cowsill was born on 26 August 1949 in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. He is known for A Family Thing (1968), The Barbara McNair Show (1969) and Family Band: The Cowsills Story (2011). He has been married to Mary Jo Ferr since 7 January 1978.
