University College, informally known as Castle, is the oldest constituent college of the University of Durham in England. Centred on Durham Castle on Palace Green, it was founded in 1832 by William van Mildert, Bishop of Durham.
Durham University has 17 colleges, of which University College is the oldest, founded in 1832. The newest college is South, founded in 2020. The last single-sex college, St Mary's, became mixed in 2005 with the admittance of male undergraduates. One college, Ustinov, admits only postgraduates .
All students at Durham University are members of one of our colleges. Colleges are residential communities that offer student-led opportunities and events in drama, music, sport and volunteering, as well as a wide range of other activities and facilities.
Overview. About us. South offers fantastic opportunities to students who would like to share in the adventure of developing and shaping our College's identity. This is based on the principles described in our motto: 'Libertas, Aequalitas, Civitas Totius mundi', in English, 'Freedom, Equality and Global Citizenship'. Find out more about us.
