Website. www.schmalkalden.de. Schmalkalden ( German pronunciation: [ʃmalˈkaldən]) is a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, in the southwest of the state of Thuringia, Germany. It is on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest at the Schmalkalde river, a tributary to the Werra.
It received its name from the town of Schmalkalden, which is located in modern Thuringia. Although created for religious motives soon after the start of the Reformation , its members later came to have the intention that the League would replace the Holy Roman Empire as their focus of political allegiance.
