Catherine II (born Princess Sophie Augusta Frederica von Anhalt-Zerbst; 2 May 1729 – 17 November 1796), most commonly known as Catherine the Great, was the reigning empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796. She came to power after overthrowing her husband, Peter III.
Sophie Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst (9 March 1663 – 14 September 1694), was a German noblewoman member of the House of Ascania and by marriage Duchess of Saxe-Weimar . Born in Zerbst, she was the eleventh of fourteen children born from the marriage of John VI, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst and Sophie Augusta of Holstein-Gottorp.

Christian August was a prince of a small principality in Germany. He achieved enormous fame as a general serving under Frederick William I of Prussia.
The future Catherine, christened Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst, was born at Stettin in the Prussian province of Pomerania (now Szczecin, Poland) on May 2, 1729 (April 21 according to the calender in use at the time).
