The University of Florida (Florida or UF) is a public land-grant research university in Gainesville, Florida, United States. It is a senior member of the State University System of Florida. The university traces its origins to 1853 [13] and has operated continuously on its Gainesville campus since September 1906.

Graduate education at the University of Florida has long roots that have expanded and matured phenomenally since its beginnings in UF's earliest days. UF awarded its first Master of Arts degree (in English) in 1906, followed by its first Master of Science degree (in entomology) in 1908.
