Memories of Matsuko begins with Sho cleaning out the remaining belongings of his recently deceased aunt Matsuko. Sho gradually learns many details of his aunt’s life, and it is through his investigations that the audience learns the story of Matsuko’s past.
Memories of Matsuko is directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, a director whose other works Kamikaze Girls and Confessions drastically differ in style and tone yet this film sort of merges them both together (albeit Confessions was made after this) with a Japanese pop-culture confetti of colour and the slowly driven drama of destructive life against humanity.
Kawajiri Matsuko (Nakatani Miki) is a single woman who was born in Onoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1947 and dreams of being married to someone she loves. She stays on an elite course, but because she is fired as a teacher, her life starts going downhill. Matsuko dreams of a happy life with a man, but in reality, she always ends up being betrayed.
