24 feb 2024 · Paul Whiteman's Big-Band Orchestra holds a significant place in the history of American music, particularly during the early 20th century. This iconic orchestra, also known as the "King of Jazz," played a pivotal role in popularizing jazz and shaping the big-band sound that would influence generations of musicians to come.
The finest extant source for Paul Whiteman materials is the Archives & Special Collections department of Williams College, a liberal arts school in Williamstown, MA. Its "Paul Whiteman Collection" includes "4000 manuscript arrangements of orchestral jazz dating from the 1920s to the 1940s, as well as contemporary recordings, clippings files, and small collections of photographs and artifacts."
