  1. Important Dates and Deadlines. Program application deadlines vary by program, especially for the summer semester. Some program application deadlines are quite early and can be up to a year in advance of the term you will be studying abroad. You must meet both campus and program deadlines, so be sure to apply early.

  2. Columbia University School of General Studies offers the following majors and concentrations. Students at GS must complete a major to receive a bachelor’s degree. Students may also wish to pursue a concentration, which is optional and provides students the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge in a secondary field.

School of General Studies History Founded in 1947, in large part to accommodate the wave of veterans returning from World War II, the School of General Studies (GS) is the liberal arts college at Columbia created specifically for students with nontraditional backgrounds who seek a traditional education at an Ivy League university.
