Dieter Roth's first one-man show was mounted by the Museum College of Art in Philadelphia in September 1964. Roth now began working with chocolate and would continue to use organic materials, for instance in his mildew pictures, so-called "zerfallobjekten and-bilder" ["Decay objects and pictures"] and "Gewürzbildern" ["Spice pictures"].

He was also known as Dieter Rot and Diter Rot. He was born Karl-Dietrich Roth in Hannover, the first of three sons.

Dieter Roth ( Hannover, 21 april 1930 - Bazel, 5 juni 1998) was een Zwitsers dichter, beeldhouwer, graficus en interdisciplinair ( performance en multiple) werkend beeldend kunstenaar van Duitse komaf. Hij is en vertegenwoordiger van de zogenaamde 'concrete poëzie'. Als nom de plume (pseudoniem) verkoos hij de naam "Diter Roth".
