Hopkins rarely stepped into the spotlight. He was a session man through and through, with little in the way of ego.

In 2019, on what would have been Hopkins’ 75th birthday, London’s Royal Academy of Music posthumously bestowed a scholarship in his name and honor. Nicky Hopkins is an unsung hero, a keyboardist of extraordinary talent whose contributions to music will live on today, tomorrow and the next day.
In 1973, Nicky recorded his solo album, ‘The Tin Man Was a Dreamer’. In California he was again kept busy as a session player, with The Greatful Dead, Steve Miller Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service (who he joined for a while) and Jefferson Airplane, who he had played with at the Woodstock Festival.
Guest musicians included Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, veteran session pianist Nicky Hopkins, future Airplane drummer Joey Covington on percussion, David Crosby and Stephen Stills. The album was among the earliest 16-track recordings, and its back cover shows a picture of the Ampex MM-1000 professional tape recorder used to record the album.

Nicholas Christian «Nicky» Hopkins ( 24. februar 1944 – 6. september 1994) var ein engelsk pianist og organist. Han spelte med mange av dei viktigaste britiske og amerikanske musikkgruppene på 1960- og 1970-talet, og vert ofte trekt fram som ein av dei viktigaste studiomusikarane i rockehistoria. Han vart fødd i London.
