The Walkabouts were an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984. The core members were vocalist Carla Torgerson and vocalist and songwriter Chris Eckman. Although the rest of the lineup changed occasionally, for most of the time the other members were Michael Wells, Glenn Slater and Terri Moeller.

The Walkabouts – "The Dustlands" Jetzt also ein neues Album, mit teils neuen Musikern und vor allem einer tragenden Idee, ohne die Mastermind Chris Eckman nicht wieder anfangen wollte. "Travels In The Dustland" ist nun nicht eben ein fernliegendes Grundthema, ein uramerikanisches sowieso, mit Sehnsucht ebenso aufgeladen wie mit Verzweiflung.
The Walkabouts haben es abermals geschafft, den Hörer in einer sehr überzeugenden, vielfältigen Art und Weise auf ihre Seite zu ziehen. Trübe wirkende Gefühle wurden selten so hörenswert in Szene gesetzt. "Travels In The Dustland" belegt in elf Stücken, wie stark die Band aus Seattle immer noch sein kann. Starke Empfehlung!

Hetzelfde geldt voor de primair jammerende gitaarsolo's van Eckman. De dramatische muzikale vertellingen krijgen soms bijstand van strijkers maar dit gaat nergens ten koste van de rauwe sfeer die de plaat uitademt.
