She won the talent show Star Search in 1988 after winning for an unprecedented 12 straight weeks. From it, she got her major break starring in the Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde, composed by her soon-to-be husband.

Her mother was Norwegian, and her father was an Austrian pastry chef who eventually settled the family in the small northern town of Brainerd, MN, where Linda spent the vast majority of her childhood.
