Irving Berlin, de son vrai nom Israel Beilin, est originaire de Russie ou Biélorussie, et émigre en 1893 aux Etats-Unis avec ses parents. Son père décède alors qu’il est âgé de huit ans. A quatorze ans, pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, il devient pianiste autodidacte dans des bars, et se fait un nom auprès des éditeurs de la Tin Pan Alley en tant que parolier.
