Eleftherios Venizelos is widely considered one of the greatest statesmen in the history of modern Greece. Born in Chania in 1864, he played a significant role in Crete’s struggles for political autonomy from the Ottoman Empire and eventually integration into Greece, before going on to serve as Greek Prime Minister for a combined 13 years between 1910 and 1933.

30 gen 2024 · Eleftherios Venizelos lasciò Atene la notte del 24 settembre, con l'aiuto delle ambasciate francese e britannica, alla volta di Creta. Il 9 ottobre si recò a Salonicco (26 settembre Giuliano) ed entrò a far parte del "Comitato di Difesa Nazionale", trasformato in "Governo di Difesa Nazionale", che guidò insieme all'ammiraglio Pávlos Koundouriótis e al generale Danglís.

Avvocato e giornalista liberale, durante la guerra greco-turca del 1897 capeggiò la fallita rivolta cretese contro la Turchia, riuscendo comunque, con l’appoggio delle potenze europee, a ottenere per l’isola un governo autonomo, del quale fu ministro della Giustizia (1899-1901).

The man. Eleftherios Venizelos was born in the Turkish-occupied Crete in the village of Mournies, which is situated outside the town of Hania, on August 11, 1864. His father Kyriakos Venizelos, a merchant by profession, ran a china shop in Topanas, the Chrostian neighborhood of Hania. His mother, Styliani Ploumidaki, came from Therisso.
