After studying theology, he became Agent-General of the Clergy in 1780. In 1789, just before the French Revolution, he became Bishop of Autun.
Initially a cleric, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord was chaplain in the parish of Saint-Pierre-de-Reims in 1775, in which capacity he was present at the coronation of Louis XVI.
