Frederick FitzClarence was the second (illegitimate) son of King William IV and his mistress Dorothea Jordan. He was born 9 December 1799 and died on 30 October 1854. This half-length portrait of Fitzclarence, depicted in the robes of peer of the realm, must have been painted in 1831, or soon after, when he became a peer and also became Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He was the illegitimate son of William IV and Mrs Jordan.
His nephew, Edward FitzClarence also served in the Royal Fusiliers but died of wounds after the storming of the Redan at Sevastopol in 1854. Lord Frederick was granted the rank of a marquess' younger son in 1831 and reached the rank of Lieutenant-General in the army.
