Andrew Cunningham was born in Rathmines, County Dublin, on January 7, 1883. At the age of ten, he was sent to Stubbington House, a naval school in England which specialized in preparing pupils for examinations to enter the Royal Navy. In 1897, Cunningham succeeded in joining the Navy as a cadet aboard the training ship HMS Britannia.
