Monumento de Diogo Gomes. At the very far end of the plateau over looking the bay with view to the lighthouse stands an imposing statue of Diogo Gomes a Portuguese navigator, explorer and writer. He was a servant and explorer of the more famous Henry the Navigator. He discovered some of the Cape Verde islands.

At its southern end is the tall bronze munument to Diogo Gomes, the navigator, who is considered to be the discoverer of the island of Santiago. Behind the statue is the Presidential Palace, the former Governor's House, where there is always a Capeverdian flag flying (with its nine stars for the nine islands).
