Novelist, Essayist. The British novelist and literary critic E. M. Forster was born on New Year’s Day 1879 in London. His fame rests largely on his novels A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910) and A Passage to India (1924). Between 1910 and 1913 he wrote Maurice, which was not published until the year after Forster’s death (1971).

E.M. Forster was born on New Year’s Day 1879 in Marylebone, London to Edward Morgan Llewellyn and Alice Clara (Lily) Forster (née Whichelo). His father, an architect, died in 1880, leaving his wife and son enough to be well provided for. Later combined with a further inheritance, the two were ‘much more than merely comfortable’.

Edward Morgan Forster was brought up by his mother, Alice Clara (Lily) Whichelo, after his architect father died in 1880. Despite his father’s premature death, he was raised in relative affluence, attending Tonbridge School and later King’s College, Cambridge, where he studied classics and history and began to write fiction.
