24 mag 2024 · Even though Mary Eleanor Bowes was exuberantly wealthy, she was still a woman, and in the 1770’s that was akin to being someone else’s property. Literally. Her husband was incensed when he realised that he could not take her whole fortune due to a prenuptial agreement.
Mary Eleanor Bowes was the great-great-great-great-grandmother of the Queen. A contemporary of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, Mary had a dramatic life which has been told in several books, but as I read them, I was gripped by a sense that she has had a very raw deal, not only because of what happened to her, but in posterity.

She was doted on by her father who, until his death, employed tutors for her in languages, the arts and writing, and ensured she received the sort of education usually only bestowed on sons at that time.
