  1. The Asian black bear is also known as the moon bear due to the crescent shaped patch of white fur on their chest. They are found across much of Asia where they feed on a range of fruits, insects, honey and mammals up to the size of water buffalo.

  2. Classification of Species. The Asian black bear has been classified under seven biological subspecies, depending on the size and regions. They are Himalayan black bear, Formosan black bear, Baluchistan or Pakistan black bear, Japanese black bear, Indochinese black bear, Tibetan black bear, and Ussuri black bear, with the last being the largest of them all.

  4. Geographic Range. Ursus thibetanus is widely distributed. Asiatic black bears can be found north of Pakistan, south of Afghanistan, east of the Himalayans, north of Vietnam, south of China, and in Thailand.
