Savage Messiah is one of Ken Russell’s flops, but I seem to remember the auteur saying somewhere that it was his favorite of his films. His account of the tumultuous relationship between artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915) and writer Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska (1872-1925) is typical of Ken’s attempts, mostly successful, to show what makes artists tick.

Un ritratto di una vita e di un talento splendidamente messi in scena da un ottimo regista, che rende questo film, in alcuni momenti anche estremamente divertente, un ottimo prodotto cinematografico. Splendidamente diretto ed interpretrato.

Synopsis. In the Paris of the 1910s, brash young sculptor Henri Gaudier begins a creative partnership with an older writer, Sophie Brzeska. A July 1972 New York Times article on the film indicated that the film had an extremely modest budget of $705,000 and that producer/director Ken Russell owned half of it. Fearful of M-G-M taking control of the editing, which had occurred with other studios on earlier releases, Russell made an agreement that his edit run for at least three weeks before any studio-imposed edits take effect.
