The Sporting Club (1971) God bless the New Hollywood era of the late 1960's and early 1970's: it seems to be a bottomless well of offbeat (and often criminally overlooked) gems like Frank Perry's PLAY IT AS IT LAYS, Bill Norton's CISCO PIKE, Noel Black's PRETTY POISON -- and even the flawed but still-fascinating THE SPORTING CLUB.
It didn't help that Avco Embassy head Joseph E. Levine took the film away from Peerce in post and recut it without his input. A 92-year-old Peerce discusses the issues he had with Levine in a new interview Scorpion's new Blu-ray release of THE SPORTING CLUB, which marks the film's first appearance on home video since the '80s VHS days.
