And in 2017 the Association of American Medical Colleges found that the median debt for graduating medical students was a whopping $192,000. At NYU, 62 percent of the Class of 2017 left with some debt, with the average figure slightly lower than the national average, at $184,000.
Now, with this new program from the state, students who are eligible may attend for free (the scholarship covers tuition but not college fees or other expenses). To be eligible, you must: Meet the same residency requirements as other New York State financial aid programs.

Within the last couple of years Tennessee, Minnesota, Kentucky, and Oregon have all passed laws that provide free tuition at community colleges for qualifying students.
