The journey to the Hawkesbury River feels to Thornhill like leaving the country all over again: he becomes, in a sense, an immigrant in this new landscape. This illustrates the fact that, at this point, New South Wales is an entirely unknown place to Westerners. 50 miles might not be a great distance today, but in 1811, it meant the difference between civilization and complete wilderness.
